From NIC with Love “Breakthroughs”

Sarina Wasserman, 15, is a OneVoice Young Ambassador from Santa Barbara, CA. She is joining OneVoice on our trip to Nicaragua and will be posting daily reflections here (as internet access allows). Sarina loves music, people, traveling, service, and Oreo cookies–Doublestuff, natch.
Breakthrough

Robbie Schaefer connects with elementary children in Nicaragua through the universal language of love.

Breakthroughs…today was full of them. The young children joined us yesterday as planned.  What we didn’t plan for was that double the amount of kids would show up!  When we had our first team meeting, Robbie said, “On trips like these we always have two first days. One with the mentors, and the other with all of the children.” He was so right.  Our first day working with the local elementary school students was yesterday and it did not go as smoothly as we had planned.  But today, wow, today was amazing!  First days are always a little rough; whether it’s a first day of school, first day of a sport, or first day of a OneVoice program, they are never as smooth as you had made them out to be in your mind. But, once you can adapt and get into the swing of things, that’s when the magic happens. Today, our OV team and the mentors worked as one cohesive unit, and we got to experience what it feels like to cultivate joy and connection with children!  The local students here rarely get an opportunity to experience music, art, and movement in the way that we have brought it to them, and to see how much joy they get out of it is truly rewarding.  Today, we broke through our initial first day hurdles and the magical work of CreatED started to simmer. And, after some light rain towards the end of the day, we all got to witness the sun break through the stormy clouds… it felt like a beautiful nod of approval from the universe.
Con Mucho Amor (With lots of love),
Sarina
